Join Us On Our Greatest Adventure Story: Comrades on the Colca: A Race for Adventure and Incan Treasure in One of the World’s Last Unexplored Canyons

October 18th, 2016  |  Published in Blog, Eugene Buchanan

Today, you can join Eugene Buchanan on a wild ride down the deepest gorge in the world.

Through his book that is. Proudly released by Conundrum Press today, Buchanan’s Comrades on the Colca: A Race for Adventure and Incan Treasure in One of the World’s Last Unexplored Canyons is available through our website, Amazon, and booksellers nationally.

Eugene is no stranger to danger, nor penning outdoor tales of adventure and intrigue. A former reporter for the Denver Business Journal and 14-year editor-in-chief of Paddler Magazine, Eugene has written about the outdoors for more than 25 years, from covering the X Games for ESPN.com to working for NBC at the Beijing Olympics.

In this nonfiction narrative, Eugene takes readers along for a rollicking ride through South America in a river race where he finds a mummy-filled cave and even gets wrapped up in a legend linking long-lost Incan riches to a riverfront castle in Poland. With a team of Polish explorers on a first descent down the Cruz del Condor section of Peru’s Colca Canyon, they will negotiate everything from unrunnable cascades to skin-bubbling plants. And they will discover not only the camaraderie needed to survive but a rival Polish team bent on beating them.

Interspersed with tales of Incan history, legends of treasure hunting, and other South American exploits, Comrades on the Colca plunges the reader into a gripping adventure narrative that may even entice the reader to reach for their own paddle and a quick plane ticket to the wilds of Peru.

Leading up to its release, the book has received plenty of press, including in Canoe & Kayak Magazine, Steamboat Pilot & Today, and Gear Institute. We are expecting additional reviews and author interviews immediately following publication. A number of writers have endorsed the book as well, including Hampton Sides, New York Times bestselling author of Blood and Thunder, and In the Kingdom of Ice, and Peter Heller, national bestselling author of The Dog Stars and The Painter.

Eugene is also the author of Brothers on the Bashkaus and Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids.

A member of New York’s prestigious Explorer’s Club, Eugene is the founder of Paddling Life and a Contributing Editor for Powder and Canoe & Kayak magazines. An avid adventurer with several first descents to his credit, Eugene’s passion for traveling, writing, and paddling has taken him to more than 30 countries, from Australia and Africa to South America and Siberia. His articles have been published in the New York Times, Men’s Journal, Sports Afield, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Adventure Journal, Skiing, Ski, Powder, Backcountry, 5280, Bike, Mountain Bike and other publications.
